25th anniversary of the Saint-Emilion Jurisdiction’s inscription on the World Heritage List & European Heritage Days

Listed as a World Heritage Site in 1999, the Saint-Emilion vineyard was the first to be recognized by UNESCO as a cultural landscape. In 2024, the Juridiction of Saint-Emilion invites you to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this listing and (re)discover the beauty and secrets of this world-famous vineyard!

On the weekend of September 21st and 22nd, 2024, the 8 communes welcome you to celebrate this anniversary and the European Heritage Days, under the theme “Heritage of itineraries, networks and connections”!

The 8 communes of the Juridiction are offering concerts, entertainment for young and old, a masterclass that promises to be legendary in Saint-Emilion, a round-table discussion on UNESCO-listed vineyards, a relaxation area in front of the Saint-Emilion House of Wines, the opening of historic buildings in the various communes…

On Saturday evening, you can also watch the torchlight procession of the Jurade de Saint-Emilion, the 8-hundred-year-old wine brotherhood and guardian of traditions. The highlight of the evening will be a pyrotechnic show entitled “Lumières sur la Tour” (Lights on the Tower), presented by the commune and “Soirs de Fête”, to celebrate the Heritage Night.

Finally, on Sunday, one of the traditional Jurade festivals will be held: the Ban des Vendanges (Harvest Proclamation). An opportunity to catch a glimpse of the many international personalities inducted for the occasion! In recent years, Tony Parker, Thomas Pesquet, Colin Slade, Valentin Porte and Denis Brogniart have all taken part in the Ban des Vendanges!

UNESCO ROUND TABLE

In France, 3 vineyards are listed as World Heritage Sites. Firstly, the Saint-Emilion vineyard in 1999, followed by the Burgundy and Champagne vineyards in 2015.

To mark the 25th anniversary of Saint-Emilion’s inscription, Jacques-Olivier PESME, Executive Director of Wine Origins Alliance, is honoring us with a unique round-table discussion.

For 1h30, we will share our thoughts on the challenges facing our registered vineyards: climate change, the environment, preservation of cultural landscapes, wine tourism…

A concert of Baroque music, with Michael Haydn’s Missa Tempore Quadragesimae on the programme, and a diversion into French mélodie, arranged for choir (Hugo, Wilder and Bussine) through chords and delicate melodies (reflected in Offenbach’s Barcarolle). Last but not least, there’s contemporary music from American composer Dan Forest, whose compositions combine fervent words with syncopated rhythms, directly inspired by Bernstein’s West Side Story!

Dominique Rodriguez – Piano, Jacques Charpentier – Musical Director

Venue: Vignonet church

Access to the concert 30 minutes beforehand. This is a free event with no need to book, subject to availability (maximum capacity: 80 people).

TsanTa

Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes

The vocal trio TsanTa (“to sing” in Occitan phonetics from the Limousin region) plunges gracefully into the treasures of Occitan tradition, extracting from its depths the most exquisite gems, which they adorn with a modern touch.
Émeline Marcon, Louise Le Creurer and Julie Calleau became friends while studying music in Bordeaux. After a decade, fate brought them together to explore tales and songs in the Occitan language, inherited from their native lands of Limousin, Lot-et-Garonne and Gascony. Their magic instrument: the voice, resonating in harmony with their quest to reconnect with the primal essence of man and nature.
Practicing the sacred art of polyphonic singing, they adorn these ancestral tales and melodies with contemporary adornments,
revealing a new light on the treasures of Occitanie. Their arrangements, inspired by their influences and musical backgrounds, breathe new life into these timeless relics.
TsanTa, singing in the Occitan language, fuse three voices in enchanting harmony, unveiling the splendors of a long-forgotten world (text credit – Le Rocher de Palmer).

Venue: Church of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes

Access to the concert 30 minutes beforehand. Free event without reservation, subject to availability (maximum capacity: 100 people).

At the end of the concert, participants will be invited to join the artists for a “verre de l’amitié” in the Salle de la Mairie de Saint-Hippolyte.

THE JURADE DE SAINT-EMILION CELEBRATES THE HARVEST!

An 8-hundred-year-old wine brotherhood, the Jurade de Saint-Emilion will be on hand for the weekend!

On Saturday evening from 10:15pm, the Jurats will parade through the streets of Saint-Emilion, torch in hand, in their traditional garb, for a legendary parade that normally takes place every year on the third Saturday in September.

From the Place Bouqueyre to the Tour du Roy, come and feel the special atmosphere of this parade rooted in the traditions of the Jurade, and catch a glimpse of the personalities who have travelled from the 4 corners of the world to share this timeless moment.

The parade will be followed by an exceptional fireworks display.

On Sunday, the Jurats will celebrate the Ban des Vendanges. This traditional festival celebrates the ripening of the grapes, which are ready to be harvested to produce vintages recognized and appreciated the world over! At around 11:30 am, the future ambassadors of Saint-Emilion wines will be inducted into the open air in the moat of the Palais Cardinal.

Finally, at 5 p.m., the Jurats return to the Tour du Roy for a final parade and the Harvest Proclamation speech.

SAINT-EMILION’S HIDDEN TREASURE: THE CHAPELLE DU CHAPITRE

The Société d’Histoire et d’Archéologie de Saint-Emilion invites you to discover a small chapel hidden in the heart of Saint-Emilion, built around 1200 in a refined Romanesque style. Formerly owned by the Chanoines, it features elegant ribbed vaults and 13th-century wall paintings, restored 40 years ago, illustrating the opposition between the sacred and the profane. Listed as a Monument Historique, it houses the memorabilia of local 20th-century figure Abbé Daniel Bergey. Located on Rue du Clocher, access is via the cul-de-sac near the “L’Envers du décor” restaurant.
